..Ex-VP banks on experience, opposition coalition
..Open to stepping down for consensus candidate
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will likely be his last bid for Nigeria’s top office.
Speaking on ARISE Television on Wednesday, Atiku said the stakes are higher and described the contest as a final attempt.
“I believe it will be my last,” he stated.
The serial presidential contender said his experience and grasp of Nigeria’s political evolution position him to lead at a critical time, noting that younger leaders still require guidance from seasoned figures.
Drawing from his tenure under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku stressed that governance experience is best acquired at the highest level.
He dismissed claims that he represents the old political order, arguing that challenges in states led by younger governors highlight the need for tested leadership at the centre.
Reflecting on past administrations, he referenced the era of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, attributing some governance lapses to inexperience.
On current politics, Atiku confirmed he is spearheading a broad opposition coalition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration he criticised as disappointing, especially on the economy.
He said the alliance is focused on strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible governance.
Despite his ambition, Atiku signalled flexibility, pledging to support any candidate that emerges through consensus.
“I will step aside for any candidate who emerges,” he said.
