…SDP presidential flagbearer says leadership failure, not lack of resources, fuels hardship
…Urges Nigerians to embrace political change ahead of 2027 elections

The presidential flagbearer of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general elections, Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that poverty in Nigeria is neither inevitable nor permanent but a consequence of policy failures and poor leadership.
Adebayo made the remarks in a message shared on his official X account, where he assessed the state of the economy and the impact of reforms introduced by the current administration.
According to him, Nigeria possesses abundant resources and economic potential capable of delivering prosperity for its citizens, but successive governments have failed to translate these advantages into meaningful opportunities for the people.
He argued that the persistence of poverty across the country reflects shortcomings in governance rather than any inherent limitation in Nigeria’s economic capacity.
“Poverty is not Nigeria’s destiny. It is the result of failed leadership and it can be defeated with the right government, the right priorities, and the right plan,” Adebayo stated.
The SDP leader maintained that despite nearly three years of economic reforms under the Tinubu administration, many Nigerians continue to face worsening living conditions marked by rising costs of goods and services and declining purchasing power.
He contended that the true measure of economic performance should not be confined to macroeconomic indicators but should be reflected in the quality of life enjoyed by ordinary citizens.
According to Adebayo, economic growth can only be considered meaningful when it leads to job creation, food affordability and improved security for the populace.
“The problem in Nigeria is not a lack of resources. It is a lack of opportunities and a failure by those in power to ensure that growth reaches the people,” he said.
The former presidential candidate stressed that the country’s vast natural and human resources remain underutilised due to ineffective governance and misplaced priorities.
He noted that a more deliberate approach to economic management could significantly reduce poverty and improve living standards across the country.
Adebayo also used the opportunity to position the SDP as a viable political alternative capable of addressing Nigeria’s socioeconomic challenges.
He said the party’s vision is centred on poverty reduction, employment generation, enhanced security and equitable management of national resources.
The SDP chieftain expressed confidence that a change in leadership and policy direction could unlock opportunities for millions of Nigerians currently struggling to make ends meet.
He further called on citizens to become actively involved in the democratic process as a means of shaping the country’s future.
“Change begins now. Join the SDP. Say farewell to poverty,” he stated.
Adebayo’s comments come amid ongoing national debates over the impact of recent economic reforms, including subsidy removal and foreign exchange policy adjustments introduced by the Federal Government.
While supporters of the administration argue that the reforms are necessary for long-term economic stability, critics maintain that they have imposed severe hardship on citizens in the short term.
Political analysts believe discussions around economic management, poverty alleviation and job creation will feature prominently in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
