Nigeria’s theatre and film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar, Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.

The death of the revered thespian was announced on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod through a post on Instagram.

Afod, in an emotional tribute, described Oyewo as a true legend whose contributions to the growth of Nigerian theatre and cinema would remain unforgettable.

“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow,” Afod wrote.

He added that the late actor’s remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the entertainment industry would continue to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.

The announcement has since sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, students, admirers, and members of the entertainment community across the country.

Oyewo’s death came barely two months after he publicly spoke about his battle with an enlarged prostate, a health challenge that had significantly affected his acting career.

In an interview earlier this year, the veteran actor disclosed that the illness had reduced his mobility and limited the range of roles he could perform.

“Before now, I could be here and there and play any role, but the sickness laid me back. I can’t play some roles anymore. Except for some minor roles. Well, thank God I am okay now,” he had said.

He acknowledged that recovering from such a condition was never easy but expressed gratitude for surviving the difficult period.

Medical experts describe enlarged prostate, medically known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), as a common condition associated with ageing in men, often causing urinary difficulties and other complications.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 when he joined the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.

His exceptional talent and dedication soon earned him recognition as one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.

He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame, the celebrated play written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi.

The role cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s finest stage actors and remains one of the most memorable performances in Nigerian theatre history.

Over a distinguished career spanning more than six decades, Oyewo featured in several iconic productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story.

His performances in numerous Yoruba-language films helped shape the evolution and growth of Nigeria’s indigenous movie industry.

Beyond the stage and screen, Oyewo distinguished himself as an accomplished academic and mentor.

He earned a doctorate degree in Drama from University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.

Through his teaching, research, and mentorship, he nurtured generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars who continue to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s creative and academic sectors.

Many of his former students and colleagues have described him as a disciplinarian, intellectual giant, and cultural ambassador who dedicated his life to preserving and promoting African theatre.

His passing marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s performing arts industry, but his enduring legacy in theatre, film, and academia is expected to live on for generations.
