Regina Askia, the Nigerian-born American-based family nurse practitioner, has taken a hit at Nigerian public office holders, accusing them of treating elective positions as if they were hereditary family titles.

In a recent Instagram post, the former Nollywood actress reminded Nigerians that the country is meant to operate as a “democratic nation”.

She also raised concerns about the growing trend of public officials attempting to hand over political power to their children and relatives.

“I thought Nigeria was a democratic nation. Too many public officials seem to think that public office is a ‘chieftaincy title’ to pass to their kids. Na real wa,” she wrote.

Her remarks come amid a wave of celebrity voices speaking out against the current state of affairs in Nigeria.

Askia first rose to fame as a model and actress. She became a household name in 1993 after playing Tokunbo Johnson in ‘Fortunes,’ a popular soap opera aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Over the years, she featured in hundreds of Nollywood films and bagged several awards and accolades.

However, she stepped away from the movie industry many years ago after relocating to the United States, where she now practices as a nurse
