A support group of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over their lingering internal crises.
The group’s reaction comes amid reports of planned defections of key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the NDC.
In a viral post circulated on Saturday, the NDC support group mocked the leadership struggles rocking both parties, portraying them as unstable platforms ahead of the 2027 general election.
The post featured a symbolic illustration showing a man clad in blue agbada — representing the NDC — extending a lifebuoy to a drowning figure dressed in green and labelled “Democracy.”
Surrounding the drowning figure were sharks bearing inscriptions such as “No Light,” “Poor Educational System,” and “Insecurity,” depicting Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
In contrast, a blue boat branded “Service to the People,” carrying smiling passengers, appeared in the background, symbolising what the group described as stability within the NDC.
The image was accompanied by a strongly worded caption rejecting what it described as negative influences within opposition parties.
“We pray against any spirit of Abure, Nafiu, Apapa and Arabambi. We bind, cast and rebuke you,” the caption read.
The statement is widely interpreted as a direct jab at key figures associated with leadership disputes in both the LP and ADC.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership crisis involving Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa.
The dispute has also drawn in Abayomi Arabambi, further complicating the party’s internal structure.
Despite multiple court rulings, including interventions by the Supreme Court and the Federal High Court, the crisis has remained unresolved.
Both factions have traded accusations ranging from illegitimacy of leadership to financial mismanagement and attempts to hijack the party’s structure.
At different times, Apapa has declared himself acting national chairman, a move consistently rejected by Abure’s camp.
The internal rift has weakened the party’s cohesion, affecting its labour wing and the influential Obidient movement.
In a recent development, the LP elected Nenadi Usman as its substantive national chairperson at its convention in Umuahia.
Similarly, the African Democratic Congress has faced its own share of leadership disputes, undermining its position as a potential coalition platform.
The crisis within the ADC has involved prominent figures such as David Mark and Nafiu Bala.
These disputes have played out in courts and party structures, with conventions and leadership arrangements frequently contested.
Recent Supreme Court rulings have further complicated the situation by sending parts of the disputes back to lower courts.
This has created uncertainty over the ADC’s readiness to participate effectively in coalition politics ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that both Obi and Kwankwaso are in advanced talks to join the NDC.
Sources suggest that discussions are about 90 percent complete, with only minor issues left to resolve.
Stakeholders across the 44 local government areas of Kano are said to have endorsed the planned defection at a recent meeting.
The emerging political realignment signals a potentially significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
