The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the President Bola Tinubu administration of orchestrating a covert plan to weaken and destabilise the opposition coalition.

The party raised concerns over a secret meeting convened by some federal officials with former state chairmen and key members of the ADC’s executive committees in the north-east and north-west regions of the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s interim national publicity secretary, said the meeting’s purpose was not related to national security or peacebuilding but aimed at intimidating and coercing opposition figures.

Abdullahi described the move as sabotage rather than politics.

He claimed the plot seeks to create confusion within the party, undermine its new leadership, and halt its growing influence as a credible opposition force in Nigeria.

He noted that such tactics are threats to democracy and capable of turning the country into a one-party state through intimidation.

“The July 1st Coalition Declaration and the July 2nd unveiling of the ADC have clearly unsettled the ruling party,” the statement reads.

“The Tinubu administration, having lost public trust, is resorting to old tactics to destabilise the opposition rather than addressing national challenges.”

The ADC spokesperson called on President Tinubu to intervene and restrain his appointees, urging him to demonstrate his commitment to democratic principles.

Abdullahi said the party would use all lawful means to resist any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
