The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South East), Barrister Mrs Chioma Nweze has applauded the Senate for passing the Bill seeking the establishment of the South East Development Commission.

Reacting to the development in a statement issued by her media handlers, Barr. Nweze noted that the passage of the bill was timely and essential for proper integration of the South Eastern enclaves in the political equation and scheme of things.

She said the legislation represents a landmark institutional development that would oil the wheels of development in South East region.

This Bill essentially aims to establish a Commission for the South East region that will be charged with the responsibility amongst others, to receive and manage funds allocated by the Federal Government for the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region and the need to tackle the ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South-east states and for related matters.

The statement partly reads, “We are particularly gratified by the action of the Senate under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio and concomitant passage of the bill by the House of Representatives earlier on. Both chambers deserve praise for answering the call of humanity and history and rising to the occasion. It is also the desire and plea of South East people that the bill when transmitted to Mr President will receive quick assent to enable the Commission activate the full benefits it bodes for the South Eastern people.”

According to her, the bill equally demonstrates the sincere commitment by both chambers of the National Assembly to address the plights of South Eastern people as further supported by the remarks by Senate President as follows:
“It’s a very important bill passed by this 10th Senate, this bill addresses all the fears of our brothers and sisters from the South East. I want to say congratulations. I pray this commission will bring a lot of development to South East and we will assist you to stop any form of agitation and bring peace to your region. When harmonized, it will addressed the fears of the south east”.

Speaking further the Presidential Aide said, “South East is a melting pot of Commerce and with the birth of this bill, accelerated economic development is also guaranteed.

“The journey to the passage of this bill has been a very long but fruitful one. The roles played by all stakeholders on the road to the passage of the bill will also be remembered too,” the statement reads.
