President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to defeat terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality, declaring that Nigeria will never surrender to fear or intimidation by criminal elements.
The President gave the assurance on Sunday during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Tinubu assured Nigerians that efforts were being intensified to secure the release of all persons currently held captive across the country.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Akume declared on behalf of the President.
The President also pledged to redouble efforts aimed at reducing the economic hardship confronting citizens and delivering the dividends of democracy to all Nigerians.
Congratulating Nigerians on 27 uninterrupted years of democratic governance since the return to civilian rule in 1999, Tinubu described the milestone as evidence of the resilience, courage and determination of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.
He paid glowing tribute to the heroes and heroines of the June 12 struggle, noting that many suffered persecution, injuries and even death in their quest to enthrone democratic governance.
According to him, their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms currently enjoyed by Nigerians.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the nation, the President said his administration remains conscious of the pains experienced by citizens arising from economic difficulties, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement in several communities.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume quoted the President as saying.
He added that the administration was addressing the challenges with compassion, determination and a strong sense of responsibility.
On security, Tinubu stressed that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of the Federal Government.
He described recent attacks and abductions in parts of the country as painful reminders that more work remains to be done in the fight against insecurity.
The President assured Nigerians that security agencies and relevant institutions would continue to receive the support and resources needed to secure communities and protect the nation’s territorial integrity.
He further emphasized that the safe return of all persons currently in captivity remains a national priority.
With political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gathering momentum, Tinubu cautioned against violence, hate campaigns and divisive rhetoric.
He urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, not to allow themselves to be used as agents of political violence, thuggery or misinformation.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he warned.
The President also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, media practitioners and families to promote peaceful coexistence, tolerance and responsible conduct as the nation approaches another electoral cycle.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, interfaith harmony and peaceful engagement with the international community.
Despite current challenges, Tinubu expressed confidence in the strength and resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The President also commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the nation and safeguarding democracy.
He urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the June 12 heroes by working collectively towards a nation where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are secure and citizens can live with dignity.
The church service attracted top government officials and dignitaries, including Senate President , Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives , Minister of Foreign Affairs , and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation .
