The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for sustained efforts toward advancing the rights, opportunities and empowerment of women and girls, noting that the progress of women is central to national development.

In a message to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, the First Lady joined millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the resilience, courage and remarkable achievements of women across the country and around the world.

Senator Tinubu noted that the annual observance provides an opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions women make to families, communities and national development, while also reaffirming the collective responsibility to promote gender equality and inclusiveness.

According to her, the theme for this year’s commemoration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls”, underscores the urgent need for concrete actions that ensure women enjoy equal opportunities and protection under the law.

The First Lady stressed that empowering women should not be viewed as an act of charity, but rather as a strategic investment in the future of the nation.

“When women are given access to education, quality healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms, justice and equity, the entire society benefits,” she said.

She noted that empowering women strengthens families, fosters more prosperous communities and helps build a more inclusive and sustainable nation.

Senator Tinubu further reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to policies and initiatives that promote the welfare, dignity and advancement of Nigerian women and girls.

She therefore urged stakeholders across government, the private sector, civil society and development partners to continue working together to remove barriers that hinder the full participation of women in national life.

The First Lady also encouraged Nigerian women and girls to remain steadfast, resilient and determined in pursuing their aspirations and contributing meaningfully to the growth and development of the country.
“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she declared.

Mrs Tinubu therefore wished Nigerian women and girls a memorable celebration and renewed commitment to building a society where every woman and girl can thrive.
“Happy International Women’s Day,” the First Lady said
