The MoU was signed on behalf of SPRiNG by Dr. Shalem Shiekuma, Project Coordinator for Benue and Plateau States.

He expressed concern over the persistent conflicts affecting several Communities across Benue, noting that addressing the cycle of violence is critical to achieving meaningful development and boosting agricultural productivity.

Dr. Shiekuma emphasized the need for deliberate efforts to restore Benue’s status as Nigeria’s “food basket,” stating that peace remains fundamental to sustainable agricultural growth.

He expressed optimism that similar initiatives would continue to rebuild peace and restore the state’s image as a leading food-producing hub.

According to him, the project aims to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for food security in Benue State, integrating peacebuilding components to ensure long-term stability.

He explained that discussions leading to the MoU began in January and were formalized to enable the state government to fully adopt and sustain the initiative beyond its implementation phase.

He commended the state government for embracing the project, noting that the partnership would foster synergy toward achieving lasting peace and improved food production.

The SPRiNG project is currently being implemented in Gwer West, Agatu, and Logo Local Government Areas of the state.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Elijah Agweye, called for increased intervention from international agencies to help address the conflicts confronting the state.

He stressed that peace is indispensable for development and agricultural productivity, adding that the causes of conflict in Benue vary across locations.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the success of the project and pledged continued support to ensure its objectives are achieved.
