Scrabble players across Nigeria will this weekend converge on Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, for the fifth edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.

The tournament slated for August 2-3 holds at the Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.

Chairman of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BYSA), Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said in a statement that the local organising committee was set to host top scrabblers from across the country.

Alabrah stated that the annual championship attracts the best players on the Nigerian and African scrabble circuit, including world and African champions.

He disclosed that no fewer than 200 participants will feature in this edition as the Governor Diri Classic remains the biggest on the calendar of the Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF).

“Every year, since 2021, the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship gets bigger and better. This year, the total prize money has again been raised to more than N10 million, with the star prize of one million naira for the Masters category winner.

“Exciting cash prizes are also lined up for the winners in the Intermediate, Veterans, Opens and Students categories as well as the best female players,” the BYSA chair stated.
