The affected child was later confirmed dead at the hospital, after he was pulled out of the exposed septic tank.

Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, a statement on Friday, explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the uncovered soak away had long posed a danger to residents in the area, saying that several warnings and pleas were reportedly made by concerned neighbours to the suspect, who failed to take necessary action.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, according to the statement has commiserated with the bereaved family and expressed his sadness and urged residents to take environmental safety seriously.

He said parents and guardians must be vigilant and ensure their wards are properly monitored at all times to prevent such needless loss of life.

While the investigation continues, the police said the suspect will remain in custody.
