All that the Computer Science department of Caleb University needed was a slim but priceless two points to successfully defend the much anticipated second edition of the University Vice Chancellor’s Cup; having won the inaugural edition in style.
According to Dr (Architect) Christian Odefadehan, acting Director of Sports, the Vice Chancellor’s Cup, featured a range of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, and track and field events, with students fiercely, showcasing their skills, versatility, dexterity and team work.
Designed in a league format where departments earn points based on the medal colour, students also competed for indoor sports like table tennis, board games, card games and other traditional games; bringing together students, members of staff and the University community, for a fun-filled weeks of exhilarating sporting events.
The traditional First Kick-Off of the exciting tournament was taken by the Vice-Chancellor, who also took a world-class penalty kick that has already gone viral on social media platforms. Prof Owens-Ibie noted “the buzz created by the competition was palpable and that students didn’t want it to end”.
One of the innovations introduced during the 2nd edition was the break-dancing competition which was sponsored by Red Bull. The competition was marked by exciting moments, including thrilling football matches which witnessed the display of superlative skills in both the male and female categories. The final football match between Business Administration and Accounting was a cliffhanger with both teams desperate to clinch the trophy.
In the end, Computer Science with 49 points emerged as the overall winner, taking home the coveted Vice Chancellor’s Trophy. International Relations/Political Science came 2nd with 47 points, while Mass Communication (37) came 3rd and Cyber Security and Architecture (30) came a joint 4th position.
The medal table also featured Accounting in 7th position with 27 points; Microbiology, Industrial chemistry, Biochemistry; Business Administration; Criminology and Psychology; Nursing and JUPEB, as well as Law.
Another highpoint was the ‘Novelty Football Battle of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, between the Academic staff led by the DVC, Academic, Prof Sunday Adewale facing the Administrative Staff led by the DVC Research, Innovation, Strategy & Administration, Prof Olalekan Asikhia; with the former winning by two goals to one.
