…as the court adjourns the case till Jan 13

The legal proceedings surrounding the tragic stampede at the Islamic High School, Ibadan, took a pivotal turn yesterday as the Oyo State legal team, led by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed a bail application filed on behalf of the defendants.

The case involved Queen Naomi Shilekunola Ogunseyi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; popular radio broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, and school principal, Abdullai Fasasi.

The tragic incident has attracted significant public attention due to the loss of 35 lives and numerous injuries sustained during an overcrowded funfair event in late 2024.

The defendants, who organised the event, face charges of negligence and endangering public safety, which led to the deadly stampede.

During a hearing on Tuesday at the Oyo State High Court, the defence team argued for bail, asserting that the accused posed no flight risk and were fully committed to cooperating with investigations.

In response, Barrister Aikomo strongly opposed the motion, emphasising the severity of the charges and the importance of ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

Justice Kamarudeen Olawoyin, presiding over the case, acknowledged the high stakes and public interest involved.

After considering arguments from both sides, Justice Olawoyin adjourned the ruling on the bail application till next Tuesday, January 13, leaving the defendants’ fate uncertain.

It would be recalled that Governor Seyi Makinde had previously stated that justice must prevail in the case while speaking at the annual interfaith programme to mark the resumption of work at the state government secretariat.

He reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and refraining from any interference in the proceedings.
