Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has postponed his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, following the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Jalingo, the governor described the incident as heartbreaking and said it would be insensitive to proceed with political activities while families and the nation are still reeling from the tragedy.

“My decision follows the deeply saddening kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, because I believed that the safety and well-being of the children are far more important than any political activity,” Kefas said.

He extended his sympathy to the families of the abducted girls and offered condolences to the Federal Government.

The governor, who noted that the safety and well-being of the children are far more important than any political activity, said the suspension of his defection plans had become necessary. He also urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts to ensure the safe return of the victims.

The defection event, previously scheduled for November 19, 2025, has now been suspended pending further consultations and an improvement in the security situation.

Meanwhile, political realignments in Taraba State have intensified ahead of the governor’s planned move.

Over the last 48 hours, all PDP members in the State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, cabinet members and top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, have defected to the APC.

Some party chieftains who spoke to our reporter commended the governor for postponing the defection rally, describing the gesture as a show of solidarity with the abducted Kebbi schoolgirls and their families.
