The Gender Development Initiative (GenDi) has called on the Ogun State House of Assembly to work on laws that will protect survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and ensure standardized medical services for vulnerable groups, including victims of rape, incest, and those with critical health conditions.

The call was made when the group paid an advocacy visit to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta

The leader of the team, Professor Olubunmi Ashimolowo, Executive Director of Gender Development Initiative, while speaking emphasized the urgent need for the Ogun State House of Assembly to pass legislation that safeguards the interests of survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

She highlighted that current legal frameworks need reinforcement to address the needs of victims, particularly those facing stigma and health complications arising from rape or incest.

She advocated for laws that ensure access to standardized medical services for victims of SGBV, including specialized care for pregnant victims of rape, incest, and those with severe health conditions.

“This aligns with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s STOP Guideline, a framework adopted in 2018 to protect the rights and health of vulnerable persons.

The team raised concerns that the public and many policymakers are not well informed about the STOP Guideline.

“The guideline is designed to protect individuals who have been impregnated due to rape, incest, or those with life-threatening health issues, by providing clear directives for medical and legal support. The team urged the House to consider integrating the STOP Guideline into state policies.

Responding, the Speaker, Hon. Oludaisi Elemide expressed his appreciation for the advocacy visit, acknowledging the challenges faced in domestication of federal guidelines and the importance of safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups.

He stated that there is a need to review existing laws and identify gaps that may affect the protection of SGBV survivors and the implementation of SRHR services.

He assured that the Assembly will examine the laws already passed and the pending bills related to women’s rights and SGBV, while saying that there is need for new legislation to enhance the protection framework.

The Speaker reiterated his commitment to work towards ensuring that appropriate laws are enacted to protect survivors of SGBV in Ogun State.

He appreciated the advocacy team for their efforts and encouraged further engagement with other relevant legislative members.
