Patrick Doyle, the ace Nollywood actor, has reacted to the BET award win that went to Tems, the Nigerian singer.

On Monday, Tems received an award for ‘Best Gospel/Inspirational Song’ at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards.

The singer snagged the award with her 2024 release ‘Me & U‘.

Tems defeated top gospel artistes like Kirk Franklin, Cece Winans, and Erica Campbell to win the category.

But the idea of a “secular” musician winning a gospel category generated criticism from viewers of the award show in Nigeria.

Joining the fray via a social media post, Patrick Doyle berated the BET for selecting an “evidently secular” artiste for the gospel category.

He urged gospel musicians to not seek validation from the entertainment industry “mafia” while claiming it was “in the grip of satan”.

“I feel the pain of mainstream gospel artistes who feel slighted that Tems an evidently secular musician was awarded the BET award for best gospel song,” Doyle wrote.

“That said I believe it’s about time that committed Christians stop seeking validation from fickle institutions like the entertainment industry mafia which by the way is in the grip of Satan.”

Tems rose to fame in 2020, courtesy of her collaboration with Wizkid on the song ‘Essence’.

She released her debut EP ‘For Broken Ears’ the same year.

In February 2023, the songstress won her first-ever Grammy award.

She bagged the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category for her role in ‘Wait for U’, the 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.

In March, the singer was honoured with a ‘Breakthrough Award’ at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards
