The Grade 1 pupil, described by neighbours as cheerful and full of life, had not gone to school that day after reportedly becoming unwell at home.

The child was rushed to the hospital for medical attention, but would not come back.

Police later confirmed that the young girl had suffered serious injuries, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding her d3ath.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

“Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for cases of r@pe and m8rder,” Magwaza said.

The news sent shockwaves through the small community, where residents struggled to come to terms with the brutality of the allegations.

As investigators worked to piece together what happened, support poured in for the grieving family.

Community members gathered, some in tears, others in disbelief, remembering a child who loved school and had her whole future ahead of her.

The legal process has now begun, with the matter drawing growing public attention. Magwaza confirmed.

The suspect, Sihle Ntshiza appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 20 and he was remanded in custody until Wednesday, May 6 for bail application.

The tragedy has also reignited urgent calls for stronger protection of children.

Gounden appealed for unity and vigilance.

“Your child is my child, together we must safeguard the future of our children,” he added
