The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that troops of Operation HADIN KAI repelled a coordinated midnight attack by terrorists on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State, killing scores of insurgents in a fierce gun battle.
The attack, which occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, saw insurgents attempting to breach the defensive perimeter of the military installation but were decisively engaged by troops.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja, describing the incident as a “desperate offensive” by insurgents weakened by recent military operations.
According to him, troops, led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, responded with “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.
“This attack is a clear indication of the desperation of terrorist elements who, having suffered significant losses in recent operations, continue to resort to futile and ill-fated offensives against well-defended military positions,” Onoja said.
The military, however, confirmed that the encounter resulted in casualties among its personnel.
“Regrettably, the encounter led to the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. The Chief of Defence Staff honours their heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation,” the statement added.
The DHQ also extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and cautioned the public against spreading unverified information, particularly on social media.
It further disclosed that clearance operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and prevent any regrouping.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the soldiers, describing them as “unforgettable heroes” who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the bravery and resilience of the troops, noting that their actions prevented the insurgents from overrunning the military formation and surrounding communities.
“The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” the President said, adding that the Federal Government remains committed to equipping the Armed Forces and ensuring the welfare of personnel.
Tinubu urged troops across all theatres of operation to remain steadfast and undeterred, assuring them of the nation’s continued support.
He also called on Nigerians and the media to support the military’s efforts and refrain from actions that could undermine national security.
The President extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, as well as the government and people of Borno State, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to achieve lasting peace and defeat insurgency across the country.
