…President hails ex-Ogun governor’s legacy, loyalty, and national impact
…Cleric describes celebrant as “original Omoluabi” at Sagamu thanksgiving
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Ogun State governor and senator, Gbenga Daniel, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a distinguished engineer, accomplished entrepreneur, and steadfast political ally.
In a congratulatory message to mark the milestone on April 6, 2026, the President lauded Daniel’s enduring contributions to national development, highlighting his professional achievements, governance record, and continued relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Tinubu’s goodwill message, read on Easter Monday by his former aide, Yemi Shodimu, at a special thanksgiving service held at Abraham’s Tabernacle in Sagamu, commended Daniel’s rise through diligence, resilience, and courage.
He noted that Daniel founded Kresta Laurel in 1990, an electro-mechanical engineering firm that has grown into a leading player in Nigeria’s engineering sector, particularly in elevator installation and maintenance.
The President also praised Daniel’s tenure as governor of Ogun State between 2003 and 2011, describing it as transformative, with strong emphasis on industrialisation, infrastructure, education, and public-private partnerships. He cited legacy projects such as the initiation of the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport and the establishment of the Tai Solarin University of Education.
Now representing Ogun East in the Senate since 2023, Tinubu commended Daniel for sustaining his contributions to governance and national development.
Reflecting on their long-standing political relationship, the President recalled Daniel’s role in his emergence as governor of Lagos State in 1999, noting that he mobilised support among Yoruba professionals to ensure a successful election and transition.
“Today, I celebrate Senator Gbenga Daniel for his professional exploits, governance strides, and political achievements built on hard work, tenacity, and courage,” Tinubu said, describing him as a committed progressive and a respected leader in the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He further appreciated Daniel’s political journey—from the Alliance for Democracy to the Peoples Democratic Party and back to the APC—adding that his return to the progressive fold has strengthened the party.
The President also extended warm wishes to Daniel, his wife Olufunke, and the entire family, praying for continued good health, longevity, and greater impact.
Similarly, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described Daniel as a distinguished leader whose life embodies service, excellence, and commitment to national development.
Represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, at the thanksgiving service, Abiodun said attaining the age of 70 is a significant milestone that calls for reflection on a life of impactful service and enterprise.
He noted that Daniel’s contributions have left a lasting imprint on Ogun State and Nigeria, praising his transition from a successful private sector career into public service.
“As a serving senator, he has continued to provide purposeful leadership through effective representation and policies that improve the welfare of his constituents,” the governor said.
Abiodun also described Daniel as a man of strong family values, whose personal life reflects the integrity evident in his public service.
In his remarks, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, described Daniel as “the original Omoluabi,” praising his character and leadership while in office.
Adeboye recalled his interactions with Daniel during his tenure as governor, noting that he was responsive and fulfilled promises made during his administration.
The cleric, who said he altered his schedule to attend the event, expressed high regard for the former governor, praying that he would end well in life and politics.
Delivering an exhortation from Psalm 90:12, Adeboye urged Nigerians to live purposefully, emphasising that what matters most is the quality of life lived, not its length.
The thanksgiving service attracted prominent dignitaries from across the country, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and associates, reflecting the high esteem in which Daniel is held.
Responding, Daniel appreciated President Tinubu, Governor Abiodun, and other dignitaries for honouring him, praying for God’s reward upon them.
In a light-hearted remark, he acknowledged former governor, Ibikunle Amosun, describing him as a “formidable successor” while noting that their relationship has since strengthened.
The event also witnessed the presence of notable personalities including representatives of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, traditional rulers, and political leaders from within and outside Ogun State.
