..Say intervention saved sector from collapse
..Welcome compactor truck initiative for PSP operators
The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Ogun State Chapter, has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for what it described as a decisive intervention that rescued the state’s waste management sector from imminent collapse.
In a statement issued by its State Chairman, Pastor Jolaoluwa Emmanuel Gbenga, the association noted that recent administrative reforms within the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) have effectively addressed long-standing operational bottlenecks that had hindered efficient service delivery.
Gbenga specifically lauded the appointment of Honourable Farouk Akintunde as the Managing Director of OGWAMA and Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, describing the move as timely and strategic.
According to him, Akintunde’s leadership has already begun to yield positive results, with noticeable improvements in coordination, responsiveness, and overall efficiency in waste management operations across the state.
“The recent changes have restored confidence in the system and repositioned OGWAMA to better serve the people of Ogun State,” Gbenga stated.
The association further praised the state government’s initiative to strengthen the capacity of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators through the provision of high-capacity compactor trucks.
The initiative, conveyed through the Commissioner for Environment, Honourable Ola Oresanya, is expected to significantly enhance waste collection and evacuation, particularly in densely populated urban centres.
Gbenga noted that the planned deployment of modern waste management equipment would not only improve operational efficiency but also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
He reaffirmed AWAMN’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts and called for sustained collaboration between stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability of the sector.
The association expressed optimism that with continued reforms and strategic investments, Ogun State is on course to becoming a model for effective waste management in Nigeria.
