The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, has announced the death of veteran media professional and former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde.

Akintunde, a versatile broadcaster and respected sports analyst, passed away after a prolonged illness, bringing to a close a remarkable career in journalism and sports broadcasting.

In a statement released by the union, Secretary , Bunmi Adigun, the NUJ described the late broadcaster as a committed professional whose career was marked by dedication, excellence, and passion for the media industry.

During his active years, Akintunde served with distinction as Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), where he played a key role in shaping quality programming and mentoring younger media practitioners.

Colleagues and associates recall him as a journalist who demonstrated uncommon professionalism and deep knowledge of sports journalism, earning admiration across the media and sporting communities.

The union noted that Akintunde remained committed to journalism and sports development throughout his lifetime, contributing significantly to the growth of broadcasting in Ogun State and beyond.

As SWAN Chairman, he was credited with promoting professionalism among sports writers while strengthening collaboration between the media and sports stakeholders.

Many who worked with him described him as disciplined, hardworking, and passionate about raising standards within the journalism profession.

The NUJ said his death represents a major loss to the media industry, particularly the sports journalism community where he built a legacy of excellence.

The council extended its condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, and associates, urging them to take solace in the impactful life he lived.

According to the statement, details of burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.

The union called on members of the media, friends, and well-wishers to remember the family in prayers during this difficult period.

It also prayed for strength and comfort for the family as they cope with the loss.
Akintunde’s career is widely regarded as one defined by service, professionalism, and commitment to truth and responsible journalism.
