The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has called on Nigerians to embrace tolerance and peaceful coexistence, describing unity as the bedrock for national development.

Shettima made the call on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Majesty, Jacob Gyang Buba.

According to the Vice President, Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than division, noting that all citizens are bound by a shared heritage that outweighs ethnic or religious differences.

“We are all connected one way or the other. What binds us together as a people supersedes whatever threatens to separate us. There can be no development without peace,” Shettima said.

The Vice President, who was in the state for the grand reception of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and other political leaders into the All Progressives Congress (APC), commended traditional rulers for their role in maintaining social harmony.

He described traditional rulers as custodians of culture and peace, adding that they play a critical role in promoting stability within their communities.

“They are not only custodians of our cultural heritage; they also help in upholding society by constantly preaching peace among their subjects,” he stated.

Shettima also welcomed the growing political cooperation between the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and Governor Mutfwang, describing it as a positive development for Plateau State.

“The National Chairman, who is an indigene of Plateau State, pledged his full support to the Governor. With their coming together, the state stands to enjoy more dividends of democracy. That is good for the people,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the political realignment, Shettima noted that it would further enhance peace and stability in the state and across the country.

“There can be no development without peace. With their coming together, the state will enjoy more peace and tranquility,” he added.

In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang commended the working relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, saying it would continue to yield positive outcomes for the nation.

“The relationship between Mr. President and the Vice President remains cordial and focused on delivering good governance for Nigerians,” the governor said.

The Gbong Gwom Jos, in his response, appealed for increased security efforts and genuine reconciliation to address the challenges confronting Plateau State and other parts of the country.

“While we appreciate the efforts of the security agencies, we appeal for more security and true reconciliation in all parts of the country,” the monarch said.

He urged Nigerians to respect one another and reject violence, stressing that religion does not support acts of insurgency or lawlessness.

“Islam and Christianity do not support violence or trouble-making. We all believe in God Almighty, so there is no justification for killing one another,” he added.

The royal father thanked the Vice President, the APC National Chairman, and the Plateau State Governor for the political realignment, describing it as a welcome development for both the state and the nation.

Shettima later expressed appreciation to the government and people of Plateau State for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage during the visit.
