The Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable industrial ecosystem across the state.

Speaking at a two-day capacity-building workshop for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) officers, waste vendors, and Private Sector Participants (PSPs), the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Oladimeji Oresanya, said the state is determined to usher in a new era of industrial waste management driven by synergy, standards, and practical solutions.

The workshop, themed “Synergy, Standards, Solutions: Forging a New Era of Waste Management in Ogun State,” underscored the government’s resolve to deepen collaboration among stakeholders.

Dr. Oresanya, represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Akinbode Shofela, said the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun remains unwavering in its quest to maintain an environment that supports industrial growth without compromising public health.

“This workshop complements existing initiatives and reinforces the message that sustainable industrial development is a shared responsibility of every facility operating within our borders,” he said.

He warned that improper industrial waste management has consequences that can no longer be overlooked, listing soil and water contamination, air pollution, occupational hazards, public health risks, and long-term environmental degradation as critical concerns.

“On the flip side, proper waste management enhances operational efficiency, reduces costs, boosts corporate reputation, and promotes a circular economy,” he added.

Declaring the workshop open, the Special Adviser and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Hon. Abayomi Hunye, said the programme was designed based on his inspection tours and observations across industrial facilities in the state.

He noted that similar training held last year produced commendable outcomes, adding that many companies have shown improved compliance with state directives, just as PSP operators have demonstrated better commitment to timely waste evacuation.

Earlier, the General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Hon. Kehinde Bello, represented by the Director of Inspectorate and Compliance Monitoring, Mrs. Oluyemisi Osinaike, stressed that such workshops play a vital role in strengthening competence, fostering collaboration, and aligning regulatory strategies.

She emphasized the importance of industrial standards and regulatory frameworks, noting that they drive waste reduction, recycling, safe disposal, circular-economy practices, and alignment with global best practices and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

> “I encourage all industrial facilities here to work toward attaining certifications such as ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 45001 for occupational safety, as these help ensure continuous improvement in environmental and safety compliance,” she said.

The workshop, organized by OGWAMA, attracted more than 1,000 stakeholders, including HSE officers, waste vendors, industry representatives, and regulatory officials.
