Oyo State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging the introduction of an “entertainment tax” on weddings, burials, and other social events in the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described the claim as fake, baseless, and mischievous, urging residents to disregard it completely.

Oyelade clarified that the alleged announcement did not emanate from any official government source, stressing that all genuine tax-related documents must carry the Oyo State Revenue Code and the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service (OYIRS).

“None of these conditions were fulfilled in the viral post,” the Commissioner said. “Equally important, any authentic government tax communication must include the official address of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Office — which was conspicuously missing in the mischievous document.”

He warned those spreading falsehoods aimed at discrediting Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to desist, noting that the government remains transparent and accountable in all its policies.

“The intention behind the post was clearly to malign the image of the government and mislead the public,” he stated.

Oyelade reaffirmed that the Makinde-led administration has not introduced any tax on social gatherings or ceremonies, assuring residents that all legitimate government levies and announcements will continue to be made through verified and official channels.
