The police command in Lagos says there are “no sufficient grounds” to proceed with the case involving Paul Adefarasin, senior pastor of House on the Rock Church, who was seen with a gun-like object.

A statement on Wednesday by Abimbola Adebisi, the Lagos police spokesperson, said the command has decided to discontinue the case involving Adefarasin.

In a video that appeared online in June, the cleric was seen pointing gun-like object at a content creator while driving in Lagos.

The video triggered backlash on social media as many Nigerians criticised the cleric for holding a gun-like object. The cleric, however, denied carrying a firearm.

Afterwards, the police invited Adefarasin for questioning, while stating that the object seen in the footage was a stun gun.

The police said a stun gun is classified as a prohibited anti-riot equipment.

Providing update on the incident, Adebisi said after investigation and statement from the cleric, it was established that the object held by Adefarasin in the video was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm.

“Following the incident, wherein Pastor Paul Adefarasin turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in connection with a viral video showing him holding a gun-like object, the Lagos State Police Command wishes to provide a further update on the matter,” the statement reads.

“After a thorough investigation, including interrogation and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was established that the object in question was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm.

“Consequent on our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued.”
