A non-governmental organisation in Ogun State, the Egba Economic Summit, (EES) has assured the management of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta of continuous support and partnership for the smooth take-off of the University.

EES, following a strategic visit to the university’s temporary campus on June 25, 2025, said the Economic group will use its expertise to assist the University in getting a smooth take off.

Led by its President, Mr. Yinka Chris Coker, the summit delegation met with the university’s Governing Council, Vice Chancellor, and top management to explore avenues of collaboration.

The visit, described as a historic moment in Egbaland, underscored the community’s commitment to the success of the federal institution.

Speaking during the visit, the Vice President of the summit and head of its secretariat, Dr. Gbenga Adeoye, highlighted the key roles played by Egba stakeholders in the establishment of the university.

He recalled his own presentation at the Senate public hearing in Abuja and acknowledged the backing of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, in the advocacy efforts.

Adeoye, a lawyer and chartered accountant, introduced members of the delegation as accomplished professionals across diverse sectors.

These included the immediate past president of the summit and former PENGASSAN President, Chief Shina Luwoye, who now heads Ecogas; Engr. Ola Sobande, a former Shell MD and pioneer of the Egba Economic Summit Group; and Prince Abiodun Karunwi, a seasoned builder and former Total executive.

He stated that Egba sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora—such as Captain Temilola Okesanjo, Barr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, Chief Yinka Kufile, Alhaji Saheed Egbeyemi, Chief Francis Meshioye, Bunmi Lawson, and others—are poised to provide financial, infrastructural, and technical support to the university.

Adeoye emphasized the need for the university to consider locating its temporary campus near the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi Aba, citing security, proximity to the proposed permanent site, and ease of operations.

He also expressed gratitude to key figures who facilitated the university’s establishment, including Senator Lanre Tejuoso, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Prof. Musa Olomu (former CMD, FMC), and Prof. Femi Balogun.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing the university’s principal officers and council members, as well as former President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the bill into law.

In his response, Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Usman Shanawa, lauded the Egba Economic Summit for its proactive engagement, stating that Egbaland’s collaborative model should be emulated by other parts of the country.

He mandated the university’s management to maintain a strong partnership with the summit and other stakeholders, assuring that the host community would be considered in appointments and development plans.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Fatiu Abiola Arogundade, expressed appreciation for the summit’s support and disclosed that student admission is scheduled to begin in September 2025.

He said the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has provided temporary office space and donated the Wole Soyinka Library, while the FMC has agreed to serve as the teaching hospital.

Registrar of the university, Dr. Gregory Olukayode Obayomi, in a vote of thanks, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to a lasting partnership with the Egba Economic Summit and the broader Egba community.

Other principal officers present were the university’s Bursar, Mrs. Adedokun Omolola Olufunso; Librarian, Dr. Idiat Odunola Agboola; and council members Kabiru Yahaya, Chinenye Moses, Uyiosasere Ekhosuehi, and Joshua Adewale.

The summit and university management agreed to maintain regular engagements to facilitate the institution’s rapid development
