As part of its push to redefine political engagement and strength democracy in Nigeria, “The Alternative”, a citizens-driven political movement led by Segun Sowunmi, will on Thursday, July 3, hold the SouthWest edition of Town hall meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The event, which is expected to draw participants from across the six SouthWest states, is aimed at mobilising citizens toward a new political direction focused on inclusive development, public accountability, and people-centered governance.

Sowunmi, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State is a seasoned political strategist, said the town hall is part of a broader consultative drive by “The Alternative” to create a platform where Nigerians can openly discuss their concerns and shape the agenda for 2027 and beyond.

The South-West edition follows a successful series of town hall meetings already held in other geo-political zones, including Jos (North-Central), Kano (North-West), Bauchi (North-East), Port Harcourt (South-South), and Enugu (South-East).

Each event had served as a platform for citizens to engage directly on issues of national importance and express their aspirations for a more responsive and accountable political system.

Sowunmi will be joined by other nationalists, thought leaders, and civic actors to discuss critical national questions and chart a path for credible leadership, active citizen participation, and the rebirth of governance driven by integrity, vision, and competence.

In a video invitation circulated on social media, Sowunmi urged young people, professionals, civil society groups and political thinkers across the region to attend, stating: “We are not just gathering for politics. We are gathering for clarity, for purpose, and for a deliberate decision to shape the kind of leadership we want.”

According to him, the concept of an alternative platform is aimed at identifying and supporting quality candidates at the local level. This platform seeks to empower citizens to choose leaders who genuinely represent their interests, rather than relying on established political parties that may prioritize their own interests.

He emphasised that “The Alternative” was borne out of a deep dissatisfaction with the current political order and the urgent need to present a credible, visionary and people-conscious front.
