The Acting State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Bayelsa State, George Turnah, has commended key figures and institutions for their unwavering commitment to democratic principles in Nigeria.

In a statement to mark Democracy Day 2025, Turnah recognized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, 27 Pro-Wike members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Chief Dan Osi Orbih as heroes of Nigeria’s democracy.

“These individuals and institutions exemplify the strength and resilience required to protect democratic ideals.”

The recognition of these heroes underscores a collective commitment to defending democracy in Nigeria, inspiring future generations to advocate for justice, integrity, and true democratic governance.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: A Beacon of Courage

At the forefront of this recognition is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, whose leadership has been pivotal in defending democracy in Rivers State. His steadfast courage in the face of adversity, coupled with his bold political will, has proven essential following the Supreme Court’s revelation that Rivers State was devoid of democratic governance. President Tinubu’s unwavering stance emphasizes the need for integrity in governance and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria: Guardians of Justice

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has also been hailed for its decisive role in upholding the integrity and independence of the judiciary in a democratic context. With courageous determination, the Supreme Court has boldly confronted the undemocratic practices of Governor Siminalaye Fubara, whom they have characterized as a despot. The Court’s commitment to justice exemplifies the critical checks and balances that are vital for the health of Nigeria’s democracy. This assertion has set a precedent for the necessary accountability required from those in power.

Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike: A Fighter Against Impunity

Equally noteworthy is the contribution of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON. His relentless fight against impunity and undemocratic practices within both the Rivers State governance and the People’s Democratic Party administration is commendable. Wike’s efforts signify a battle for the hearts and minds of citizens who yearn for transparent governance. His actions demonstrate a commitment to restoring a sense of democratic integrity that has been challenged in recent times.

The 27 Pro Wike Rivers State House of Assembly Members: Unyielding Defenders of Democracy

The 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Speaker Martins Amaewhule, are recognized for their doggedness, commitment, and stance against the impunity and undemocratic governance of Rivers State by Governor Siminalaye Fubara, even at the expense of their welfare and wellbeing. Their fight for democratic values and practices in Rivers State reflects a powerful unity amongst legislators, demonstrating their determination to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability in governance.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Chief Dan Osi Orbih: Champions of Resistance

Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Chief Dan Osi Orbih are also celebrated for their significant roles in opposing impunity and undemocratic practices from powerful figures within the People’s Democratic Party. Senator Anyanwu’s relentless fight against his undemocratic removal from office as National Secretary of the PDP saw him challenge this injustice all the way to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Chief Dan Osi Orbih battled against a cabal of governors’ intent on hijacking the party structure in the South South Zone through undemocratic means. Their courageous actions in the face of formidable opposition underscore their dedication to the principles of democracy.

” As Nigeria continues to navigate its political landscape, the courage and determination displayed by these individuals and institutions serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring future generations to advocate for justice, integrity, and true democratic governance.”

The statement noted that by acknowledging these champions,” we reaffirm our dedication to the principles of democracy, reminding ourselves that the fight for a just and equitable society is one that requires active participation and unwavering resolve.”
