The win marks Spurs’ first cup triumph since 2008 and their first continental silverware since the 1983-84 season. Tears flowed at Athletic Bilbao’s Estadio de San Mamés as jubilant fans and players in white celebrated the long-awaited moment.

Long seen as a club that falters in key moments, Tottenham shook off its reputation and celebrated as if it were their first-ever trophy.

The match began scrappily, with few chances for either side until Spurs broke the deadlock just before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Pape Sarr’s right-footed cross into the box took a deflection off Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and found its way to Brennan Johnson, who poked the ball home. The goal sent Tottenham fans into wild celebration while United supporters sat in stunned silence.

The game’s most dramatic moment came in the second half. With United pushing for an equalizer, Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario fumbled a free-kick, and Rasmus Højlund appeared to have a clear header into an open net. But Spurs defender Micky van de Ven intervened with a sensational acrobatic goal-line clearance in the 62nd minute to keep the lead intact.

Vicario later redeemed himself with crucial saves, first denying Alejandro Garnacho and then Luke Shaw in the closing moments to preserve the clean sheet.

With the victory, Tottenham secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, a major boost despite their dismal Premier League campaign. Spurs currently sit 17th in the table with 21 losses, just behind Manchester United in 16th, who have managed only four league wins since January.

After the final whistle, goal scorer Brennan Johnson summed up the emotional significance: “I’m so happy right now. Honestly, this season hasn’t been good at all, but I swear, not one of us players care about that. The club hasn’t won a trophy for 17 years. This means so much. All the fans get battered, we get battered about not winning anything. I’m so happy.”
