According to the President of the Abeokuta Polo Club, Dr. Sheriff Adams Abdulrahman, the groundbreaking ceremony marks a major milestone for the advancement of equestrian sport in Ogun State.

“This groundbreaking is more than the start of a Polo Club; it is the beginning of a dream to place Abeokuta on the map as a hub for polo and equestrian sports.”

“We are building not just a facility, but a legacy he said . for generations to come,”

Dr. Abdulrahman added that the club is positioned to open new opportunities for youth development, sports tourism, and social networking in the state.

“The Abeokuta Polo Club will serve as a rallying point for young talents, corporate players, and traditional leaders who believe in the power of sport to unify and transform,” he emphasized.

He further expressed appreciation for the growing support from all corners of society. “From the traditional institution to the political class, and from veterans in the military to leaders of organized labour—we are seeing a beautiful alignment of goodwill, and that alone gives us confidence in the future of this dream,” he stated.

In the buildup to the event, members of the Grand-Breaking Committee, led by the Chairman and Orunto of Owu Kingdom, Chief Abiodun Lasile, embarked on a series of high-level courtesy visits.

The team visited the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Office of the Surveyor General, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

During a visit to the residence of Rtd. Major Tijan T.G, he pledged his full support, stating:

“Polo is very uncommon in the southwest, but this is a bold and commendable vision I’m proud to support.”

The committee also paid visits to prominent figures including Chief Charles Adedotun Sobayo (Asiwaju Bada Egba), Chief Wale Adesina (Saranda), and Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Oyedele-Salako, all of whom received the initiative with enthusiasm and encouragement.

Speaking about the project, Chief Abiodun Lasile, Chairman of the Committee, said: “We are deeply encouraged by the warm receptions and commitments we have received so far”.

“This project is not just about polo, it’s about pride in Abeokuta, about community, and about setting a new standard for sporting excellence in our state,” he added.

He further remarked that the Abeokuta Polo Club is poised to become one of the finest in Nigeria.

“The layout of the site, the calibre of our planners, and the commitment from the people assure us that we are birthing something truly historic—one that will compare favourably with major polo institutions across Africa,” he stated.

Chief Lasile also stressed the community-building angle of the project.

“This is not just a sport facility—it will open doors to local jobs, hospitality growth, and offer young people a new aspiration. We are planting a seed that will blossom into multiple gains for Abeokuta and beyond,” he added.
