The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the ban on the public parade of criminal suspects, emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) commitment to upholding fundamental human rights and aligning with global best practices in policing.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that the directive remains a key pillar of the police reform agenda and underscores the Force’s dedication to ensuring suspects are not publicly paraded before formal charges are filed in court.

“This directive, previously communicated to all commands and formations, is integral to the modernization of the Nigeria Police Force and reflects its commitment to respecting the fundamental rights of all individuals, including those suspected of criminal activity,” the statement read.

The IGP stressed that the policy aligns with international human rights standards, which emphasize the protection of individual dignity throughout the judicial process.

He further assured that the NPF remains committed to operating within legal boundaries while fostering a culture of human rights awareness among its officers.

Egbetokun also called on the media and the general public to support the enforcement of the ban, urging journalists to uphold ethical reporting practices that safeguard the rights of suspects and promote a fair and impartial justice system.

“The cooperation of the media is crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring that law enforcement processes are carried out with the highest regard for human dignity,” Adejobi added.

The IGP reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force will continue implementing policies that enhance professionalism, accountability, and public confidence in policing across the country.
