The Bill was read for the first time on October 3, 2024.

While leading the debate for the second reading of the Bill, the sponsor of the Bill -Senator Eshilukun Sani Wasiu noted that the Nigerian Coast Guard when established will complement the efforts of the Nigerian navy in securing our waterways.

Collaborating the position of the Bill sponsor, Senator Nwebonyi insisted that the Nigerian Coast Guard will not only ensure the security of our maritime sector but also create multiple employment opportunities for our teeming population as well as generating revenue for the federal government.

He therefore urged other Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to support the seamless passage of the Bill into law. The Bill was afterwards put to a voice vote and it scaled the second reading.
