President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the government of Libya over the flood that has ravaged the eastern part of the North African country.

Major parts of the city of Derna — home to approximately 100,000 people — were swept away on Sunday after Storm Daniel, an extremely deadly Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, collapsed two dams.

The dams were said to have submerged many buildings in the area while drowning some residents.

The death toll has now risen to over 5,000 since the tragedy occurred on Sunday. Thousands of people are still reportedly missing.

Morgues in the parts affected by floods are reportedly overwhelmed with corpses.

In a statement on Wednesday, Anjuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, quoted Tinubu as commiserating with all the families who have lost loved ones in the “monumental disaster”.

The president said the loss of lives, homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure remains a shared grief that unites the people of both countries.

“Nigeria is ready to provide all necessary support to assist the Libyan people in overcoming this harrowing tragedy,” Tinubu said.
