The Accountant General of the state and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury, Mr Babatunde Aregbesola made this known in a keynote address delivered at the 2022 edition of International Accounting Day organised by the Accountants’ Forum in Ogun State civil service held at Simeon Adebo library, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Mr Aregbesola said accounting day presents the perfect opportunity for accountants in the Ogun State civil service to hone their networkings with one another and also to acknowledge the great work that the accounting practitioners do to make businesses thrive, support the economy and help government to navigate the complexities of finance.

Delivering the main lecture to mark the day, former accountant general in the state, Pastor Oluseye Senfuye speaking on the theme ” Recommendations on how to navigate the complexities of the accounting profession in the civil service ” said accountants play four prominent roles in civil service namely budget and budgetary forecast, accounting revenue, expenditure reporting and debt management.

Pastor Senfuye said accountants in the civil service are expected to provide robust budget information, provide adequate financial information, plan strategic policy to undertake financial assumption, ensure recording of adequate data on government expenditure, payment systems in capital and recurrent expenditures among others.

“The accountants in the public sector must be ready to provide financial analysis for the government, and also become insolvency, fund management and risk management officers for government in professionalism and acceptable manners” Senfuye said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the chairman of the forum in the state civil service, Mr Saka Ajao observed that many people do not recognize the work of an accountant until when they need money or encounter any financial issues, adding that the international accounting day is meant to appreciate the practitioners of this noble profession and celebrate them so as to spur them to do more with integrity.

In their separate goodwill messages, the former permanent secretaries in the state civil service who were past officers of the forum, Mr Olumuyiwa Olukoga and Mr Olukunle Sodeinde emphasized the importance of training and retraining for the accountants in the civil service in order to excel in their chosen profession, they also urged them to ensure that they know everything about something and something about everything as far as accounting analysis is concerned because the bulk would eventually fall on their tables.
