In a statement through his Media Aide,Mr Kunle Idowu ,the Speaker described Democracy Day as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s political evolution and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic rule and the protection of the people’s mandate.

Elemide noted that June 12 remains a symbol of the nation’s collective struggle for freedom, justice, equity and representative governance, stressing that the significance of the day transcends political affiliations and regional interests.

According to him, the annual celebration provides Nigerians, opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, assess its progress and recommit to strengthening democratic institutions for future generations.

Elemide paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of democracy whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms currently enjoyed by Nigerians, noting that their contributions must never be forgotten.

He observed that despite the challenges confronting the nation, Nigeria’s democratic experience has continued to mature, reflecting the resilience of its people and institutions.

The Speaker emphasized the need for public institutions to remain accountable and responsive to the needs of citizens, adding that democracy flourishes when government actions are guided by transparency, inclusiveness and the rule of law.

Speaking on Ogun State’s development trajectory, Elemide reaffirmed the commitment of the State House of Assembly to enacting legislation that promotes economic growth, social welfare and good governance.

He stated that lawmakers in the Assembly would continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities through quality lawmaking and effective oversight in the interest of the people.

The Speaker also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he described as his administration’s sustained efforts in advancing infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, education and economic empowerment across the state.

He noted that the cordial working relationship among the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government in Ogun State has contributed significantly to the state’s progress and stability.

Elemide stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, explaining that it also encompasses citizen participation, tolerance, dialogue and respect for diverse opinions.

He therefore encouraged Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace leadership opportunities and contribute meaningfully to national development through positive engagement and responsible citizenship.

The Speaker further acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups and civil society organisations in promoting peace, unity and social cohesion within their various communities.

He equally expressed appreciation to members of the nation’s security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property, describing their efforts as critical to preserving democratic stability.
