A deadly attack struck the Mbalom community in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Easter Sunday, leaving at least 17 residents dead and numerous properties destroyed. Search and rescue efforts continue as many others remain missing following the invasion.
Eyewitnesses reported that armed assailants entered the community, opened fire on residents and set multiple houses ablaze, forcing families to flee. The violence has left survivors displaced and resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of naira.
Authorities have yet to release a comprehensive official statement regarding the incident, though security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to restore calm and track the perpetrators. The latest violence has renewed concerns over recurring attacks in Benue and the broader North-Central region, prompting calls for stronger security intervention to protect vulnerable communities.
Destruction, looting in Chibok
In a separate incident on Sunday, suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked Awapul, a community in the Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State. The attackers reportedly struck the town in large numbers at about 1.30am, shooting sporadically and damaging critical infrastructure, including private homes and shops.
Borno State Police Command spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed the attack in the village of Awapul but stated that no lives were lost. Daso noted that the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.
A civilian joint task force source reported that grains were looted and carted away after the outlawed groups set several shops ablaze. The North-East and North-Central regions continue to face significant security challenges as authorities seek to curb the influence of insurgent groups.
