A human rights advocate and Coordinator of the Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative, Courage Nsirimovu, has criticised the Rivers State House of Assembly for passing a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the action as misplaced and politically motivated.

Reacting on it, Nsirimovu said the lawmakers should concentrate on their constitutional duties making laws and carrying out effective oversight for the benefit of Rivers people rather than engaging in what he termed unnecessary national political statements.

“This morning, the Rivers State House of Assembly is passing a vote of confidence on President Tinubu. But has the President ensured the security and welfare of Nigerians? These are the primary responsibilities of the Commander-in-Chief,” he said.

He questioned the basis of the lawmakers’ decision, citing persistent security crises across the country.

“Are they spitting on the graves of Nigerians, especially Christians, who are being murdered in the northern and central parts of the country Benue, Taraba, Plateau? Are we passing a vote of confidence on a President who has not secured our people?” he asked.

Nsirimovu described the Assembly’s action as a distraction, insisting that Rivers legislators should focus on issues directly affecting their constituents.

“They have been given another chance rightly or wrongly and should concentrate on the needs of Rivers people: education, power supply, entrepreneurship, and human rights. Look at what is happening to citizens at EFCC and police stations; look at how people are detained for months. These are the issues they should address,” he stated.

He warned that businesses and livelihoods in the state remain at risk and urged lawmakers to leave national politics alone and prioritise their core duties.

“If they don’t have anything meaningful to say, they should at least respect the pain of families losing relatives across the country
