Authorities in Nyamandlovu, Zimbabwe, have arrested a 29-year-old woman over the alleged strangling of her 19-month-old daughter, in a case that has sent shockwaves through the Seafield Estate Village community in Harare.

The tragic incident occurred on May 28 and was initially believed to be a case of sudden unexplained death. However, findings from a forensic autopsy revealed that the child, identified as Shylet Sibanda, died from mechanical asphyxiation consistent with strangulation, prompting a full criminal homicide investigation.

Police said the suspect, Simangaliso Dube, reportedly confessed to the crime during questioning, citing overwhelming frustration over the lack of financial support from the child’s father.

According to law enforcement officials, Dube claimed the persistent economic hardship and absence of paternal assistance had become unbearable, eventually driving her to commit the fatal act.

“The suspect expressed that persistent financial pressures and lack of paternal support became unbearable, leading to this tragic outcome,” said a police source familiar with the investigation.

Investigators say Dube detailed how the father had consistently failed to provide money for the child’s upkeep, further worsening her emotional and financial strain.

Police in Matabeleland North confirmed the arrest took place on May 30. They stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with officials now reviewing the broader circumstances surrounding the child’s de@th, including the dynamics of the parents’ relationship and the psychological state of the suspect.

Authorities have urged the public to report any signs of distress or violence within families to prevent such tragedies from recurring
