. The initiative is aimed to ensure free flow of water and prevent damage to properties and infrastructure.

Briefing newsmen during onsite inspection of the work, the Director General of the Directorate, Surv. Wilson Omuso, disclosed that the clearing and cleanup exercise began in Goodnews Street and Agbura second bridge axis, with more equipment mobilized to other locations.

The Directorate plans to clear downstream canals first, comprising three major canals, before proceeding to upstream canals.

Surv. Omuso explained that the downstream canals collect floodwater from other channels and let it into creeks and the sea.

He noted that desilting the downstream canals is necessary to allow free flow of water without obstruction. The Directorate is also planning to desilt the Epie Creek, Kolo Creek, and Tailor Creek.

The Secretary of the Directorate, Mr. Daniel Tenemeni, advised residents to desist from dumping refuse into water channels, warning that it could lead to blockage and flooding.

Residents, including Mr. Godwin Igiri, a landlord at Goodnews Street, have expressed joy over the initiative, commending the Governor for the timely intervention.

The Bayelsa State Government has assured its commitment to mitigating flooding in the State, promising to take appropriate action against structures blocking canals and ensuring all canals are cleared to save residents from the devastating impact of flooding.
