In a recent interview with Salient Times Newspaper Esther Egbe, Kun Khalifat Football Club’s goalkeeper, Akuchie Obinna, shared insights into his football journey, his challenges, and his aspirations.
“My name is Akuchie Obinna. I’m from Imo State, currently playing for Kun Khalifat Football Club in Owerri,” he began. For Obinna, his height and body stature were divine gifts that pointed him toward goalkeeping. “I feel it’s just a talent from God,” he said.

With over nine years of experience, Obinna has honed his craft through relentless training and self-discipline. “I’ve played for many clubs over the years. To develop myself, I trained hard with my team and committed to personal training sessions to sharpen my skills,” he revealed.
He reflected on the pressure of home games and how he prepares for tough matches: “Before match day, I focus intensely on training and put my energy into my performance on the field.”
Obinna emphasized the importance of technique in goalkeeping. “I work on my footwork, ball handling, quick reactions, positioning, and communication with my teammates. Listening to their advice and following their instructions helps me improve,” he explained. “I also read the game situation—knowing where to position myself and keeping my eyes on the ball while observing the players’ reactions.”
A standout moment in his career was successfully managing a challenging 10-against-11 match. “I focused on the ball and worked with my defenders, starting plays from the back and communicating the next pass. I’ve learned to stay calm, take instructions from my coaches, and cut out aerial threats before opponents get close,” he said.
Obinna credits his coaches for teaching him calmness, focus, and how to analyze opponents’ gameplay. He concluded with a vision for the future: “My long-term goal is to emulate the experience, confidence, and communication of goalkeeping legends like Keylor Navas. I’m working hard, trusting God, and praying for His will to be done.”
Despite the challenges, Akuchie Obinna remains steadfast in his pursuit of greatness, a testament to his resilience and passion for the game.
