The Kogi State Ministry of Health’s Epidemiology Division was alerted by the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO).

Initial investigations indicate that the fatalities followed the consumption of cassava flour from a suspected contaminated source. Eight victims were rushed to three different hospitals, where six succumbed to multiple organ failure. Fortunately, two individuals responded to treatment and were discharged.

A response team, including State and World Health Organization (WHO) officials, as well as local health officers, was quickly dispatched to the scene to investigate.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulaziz Adams, visited the surviving victims before their discharge.

Sources said a sample of the cassava flour has been sent for toxicological analysis in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Kogi State Government covered the medical expenses for the victims and has promised to release the final toxicology report to the public. Dr. Adams commended healthcare workers for their prompt response, which saved the lives of the two survivors.

A comprehensive investigation was carried out, including consultations with community leaders, environmental sanitation assessments, and water source evaluations. No additional cases or deaths have been reported.

Dr. Adams urged communities to practice healthy living habits, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activities. He thanked the affected community for their cooperation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public health and safety
