60 years Retirement Age: Concerned Staff of FMC Abeokuta Writes HoS, Others, Calls For Removal Of Prof. Musa-Olomu
The crisis rocking the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta Ogun State seems not to be over as some staff of the foremost health institution in the gateway State have written to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan seeking the removal of Prof. Abdulsamiu Adewale Musa-Olomu as the hospital Medical Director
The group also wrote Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Dr. Tunji Alausa, saying that upon the attainment of Sixty years of age by the Chief Medical Director of the FMC Abeokuta, he ought to have been shown the way out of the Hospital as Chief Medical Director.
In the letter, dated 9th February 2024, the ‘Concerned staff’ stated that any Public Officer upon attainment of Sixty (60) years of age or Eight (8)years of tenured appointment or Thirty-five (35) years in services (which one comes first) irrespective of his status or personality as stipulated in the Public Services Rules (PSR) must retire from his or her position.
“Sir, you will recall that Prof. Abdulsemiu Adewale Musa-Olomu was appointed as the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State on June 1st, 2017, and secured his reappointment for the second term in office with effect from last June 2021. Before his appointment, Prof. Musa was an Academic Staff of the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State where he took a leave of absence.
“According to his records, Prof. Musa-Olomu made a statutory declaration of age sworn to at the Customary Court, Kisi, Oyo State dated 2nd March 2009 with a claim that he was born on 6th January 1964. With this affidavit, Prof. Musa-Olomu has attained Sixty (60) years of age on the 6th January 2024.
“The appointment of Prof. Abdulsemiu Adewale Musa-Olomu as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State is under the Federal Ministry of Health which is
governed by the existing Public Services Rule (PSR) that stipulates the retirement of any serving Pubic Officer to be Sixty (60) years of age contrary to section (4) of the University Acts, pegging the retirement age of Academic staff of seventy (70) years of age.
“To our dismay, Prof. Musa-Olomu has refused to vacate the office as the Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta but still parading himself as the Medical Director, signing documents and vouchers as Chief Executive Officer, awarding contracts that should by now be considered null and void after the attainment of Sixty (60) years of age. This action contravened the position of Public Service Rules and the Federal Ministry of Health.
Referring to the same scenario at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro Abeokuta, the staff stated that “the case of a former Medical Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta in 2016, followed the same pattern like that of Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu
“We believe that any Public Officer under your watch must retire at the attainment of Sixty (60) years of age or Eight (8) years of tenured appointment or Thirty-five (35) years in services (which one comes first) irrespective of his status or personality but as stipulated in the Public Services Rules (PSR) 2021 Reversed edition Ref.No- 020908 (i) and (ii) respectively.
“We the ‘concerned members of staff’ of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State hereby appeal to your good office to prevail on the continued stay in office of Prof. Abdulsemiu Adewale Musa-Olomu as the Medical Director, for the avoidance of injustice, breach of peaceful atmosphere and impeding chaos in the center.
Prof. Musa-Olomu’s continued stay in the office is seen as a bad signal and a negative precedent to the hospital sector and the Federal Ministry of Health that should not be condoled.
We therefore, in the spirit of the principle of Justice and Fairness strongly believe in your administration and that the law is no respecter of anybody no matter how influential or highly placed, a demand for the immediate removal of Prof. Abdulsemiu Adewale Musa-Olomu without further delay.
Meanwhile, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu has always referred to a series of attempts to remove him as Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta as the handiwork of his detractors, saying that he can only leave the Hospital after he could have served his tenure as the Medical Director.
Prof Musa-Olomu said files and other documents relating to how he got to the FMC, Abeokuta remain with the University of Ilorin, saying that as a Professor, he can only retire from service upon the attainment of 70 years of age.
