The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) for school candidates.

At a briefing in Lagos state on Monday, Patrick Areghan, WAEC head in Nigeria, said a total of 1,613,733 candidates sat for this year’s edition of the exam.

Giving a breakdown of the results, Areghan said 1,361,608 candidates — representing 84.38 per cent — got credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language or Mathematics.

He also revealed that 1,287,920 — representing 79.81 per cent of the total candidates — obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

The WAEC head in Nigeria said the results of 262,803 candidates were, however, withheld “due to reports of cases of examination malpractice”.

This year’s result represents an improvement in pass rate when compared to that of 2022.

Last year, 1,222,505 candidates — representing 76.36 per cent — obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

It also represents an increase in the number of candidates that took the exam in 2022 — 1,601,047.

In 2021, 81.70 per cent of the 1,560,261 candidates that took the exam got credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
