Alleges Dismissal Over Union Activities After 30 Years of Service
Company Says Matter Already Before Lawyers
BY OUR REPORTER
A former employee of Super Engineering Company Limited, Mr. James Oketa, has demanded N22.3 million in compensation over what he described as the unlawful termination of his employment by the company.
Oketa, who reportedly served the firm for about three decades, was said to have been disengaged on December 5, 2024, from the company’s facility located within the Ikorodu Industrial Estate.
According to reports, the company cited his alleged involvement in union activities as the reason for terminating his appointment.
In a letter dated February 5, 2026, addressed to the Managing Director of the company, Oketa’s legal representatives, Zimra Attorneys (Legal Practitioners & Associates), described the dismissal as illegal, wrongful and a violation of his fundamental right to freedom of association.
The lawyers argued that the reasons advanced for his disengagement were unjustifiable and contrary to established labour rights.
They are consequently demanding the sum of N22,297,550 as compensation, covering alleged unpaid salaries from December 2024 to February 2026, alongside damages for the purported wrongful termination of his appointment.
Reacting to the development, the Managing Director of the company, identified simply as DeGab, said the issue is already being handled by the company’s legal adviser.
“The matter is being handled by our lawyer, and we are not authorised to speak to anybody about it,” he said.
He further stated that the company’s lawyer had already responded to an earlier letter from Oketa’s counsel before another legal representative was engaged by the claimant.
